Red State Update

Well now that it has passed, were the Tea Parties a success? I guess it depends on who you ask. Typically the divide seems to be across ideological lines. As a conservative myself, I was heartened, but can only hope that this is just the beginning and that populist rage will reach fruition by November 2010 for the congressional elections.

If nothing else, there was one incident in Chicago that exposed the liberal bias off CNN. Reporter Susan Roesgen, in the most unprofessional displays of journalism that I’ve ever witnessed, badgered one of the participants. She acted more like an advocate for the government than a journalist. Any news organization worth their salt should fire her on the spot. And that should be obvious to anyone whether liberal or conservative.

Forget the tea parties. I'm a liberal, and I'm telling you if we don't all come together, our constitution is going to be gone before another decade. It started with Bush, but Homeland Security is now going after you all, and I don't take any pleasure in that anymore than I did when they spied on us at peace rallies.

The first amendment is disappearing, the fourth amendment has already disappeared, so tea parties or peace rallies be damned when our constitution is being stolen from all of us. And all Americans, conservative and liberals, better wake up to what is really happening with Homeland Security or we won't be able to have a civilized discussion on our differences without HLS thinking one of us or both of us are threats, and there goes our constitutional rights...what's left of them.

(PS--I say this respectfully to you, but not to those who think we're terrorists because we have strong beliefs in one direction or the other)
Hello Jake:

I admire and appreciate your principled stand. You are right about the Constitution being trashed, but I would add the 10th Amendment as well; the one dealing with State’s rights. I’ve read that Homeland Security memo and it disturbed me. Thanks for contributing.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the link. It's frightening as hell.
HLS is now handled by each state, but I see nothing in terms of oversight for HLS at any level of government.

I "woke up" when I was at a peace rally in 05 on public property, and was pulled aside and questioned by HLS. I wasn't breaking any laws, but I was one of the organizers of the anti war/peace rally, and I had to give them my DOB, SSN, address, etc. I felt violated. I thought that couldn't happen in America.
It did, though. And now it's happening to conservatives.

I can't say enough...liberal or conservative, if you're an American, you not only have a right, but you have a duty to take your country back when it's being usurped. But to do that, we have to be Americans first, then liberal or conservative, not the other way around. That's how HLS got this far; divide and conquer.
Hey Jake:

That's a harrowing story. I wondered what would have happened if you had refused. Now I know what you meant by our 4th Amendment rights being infringed. You had every right to feel violated because you were.

At the risk of sounding like a schoolmarm, I have to ask, did you write you congressman about this? If for no other reason but for you own satisfaction in knowing you did something.

Good to hear from you. Take care.
Well, if we're going to get rid of the Constitution, we might as well do it for a good reason. Those who cling to an outdated old piece of paper beyond reason are no better than the Saudi Islamofanatics.
Maynard: You have the temerity to characterize the Constitution as outdated and beyond reason, then to compare it to whatever fuck-all doctrine the Saudi's have? The U.S. Constitution is one the most brilliant and liberal documents in the history of man. What makes it unique in our history is that it doesn't grant the people rights, but instead is directed at the government, limiting its powers, because our rights are inalienable (meaning they're God-given). Did they not teach you that in school?

They only problem is, our elected representatives who have taken an oath to protect and uphold it have chosen instead to find ways to work around it. With people like you in the electorate, it's no wonder that it has come to this.
It started long before Bush.
Back around FDR's day. After the Constitutional Convention, a woman asked Ben Franklin "What kind of government have you given us sir?" His reply: "A republic madam. If you can keep it."
As an old lefty I can say welcome to being marginalised. Protests are a great way to let off steam for the participants, but they probably don't accomplish much else. The exception being where you have a large percentage of the population on the street for weeks or months( usually in small countries) have on occasion brought down weak, corrupt governments. The Daily Show did a good segment comparing the "crowds" at Teapartys with the crowds Obama routinely drew during the campaign, election night, at the inaugaral. Not even close. Fox News will soon get bored with them, and teapartys will soon be rlegated to the status of WTO or antiabortion protests. The vast majority of Americans support Obama. Historically the political pendulum swings to the right and then back to the left. Right now it's going left.. Hold on and enjoy( or not) the ride.
It's dark out here in the Fringe and very cold. I want to come back inside.
Little by little they have been taking away and it didn't start with Bush.
Prohibition was one time where the government overstepped, and the people rose up.
I like my beer and bourbon as much as Jackie & Dunlap (OK, maybe not as much), but at least they went through the trouble of passing an Amendment to the Constitution for Prohibition (The 18th), then the 21st to repeal Prohibition. These days, neither the President, Congress, or the Supreme Court can be bothered.

Thanks for contributing.
