Anyone Else think its time to end Affirmitive Action?

We've got a black President... great, more power to his arm; I just hope he does right by America, regardless of his color or religion. However that in itself is a fairly big deal, so doesn't that mean now we can call a halt to the pervassive socio-economic cancer that is quotas and affirmitive action?

-If we truly believe in equality for all, then surely its time to dump this unfair, unequal and counter-productive measure?

Or do you think that this policy enabled the election of the first black president and therefore should continue to be championed by all?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,

Gilo.

Tooo much information; but thanks anyway, get the gist....

Cheers,

The really neat thing about affirmative action--which was given to us by Nixon--was that white, male members of the Greatest Generation, who had practiced all that racial and sexual discrimination and had no qualms about benefiting from it, were not penalized in any way. In the academic world, where affirmative action really happened, they went right on being professors and deans, and they were charged with administering the punishment ... on the men of my generation who generally were not guilty of racism. But most of us managed to have careers anyway in spite of a system where it was against the law to hire us.
That's fair comment Fang. However its now gone too far. A fully qualifed paramedic, ex-services, ect will be considered behind someone who is from a minority group but has none of the above qualifications and experience. If push comes to shove whose hands would you rather have your life in anyway?

In my book its all about merit and suitability for the role, not meeting some racial quota. That is just pure BS. And to underline my point I would be as equally unhappy if the racial quota favored white people over minorities as opposed to a true meritocracy. Fair Enough?

It's in instances like these that I am trying to make my point. And moreover who is more deserving of that job, someone who has served in our armed forces or someone who hasn't?- No brainer for me, but other folks think different and now that translates into hiring policy....What has happened to America?
What are you going on about? A fully qualified paramedic would be considered behind someone from a minority group without qualifications for what position? You aren't forming complete thoughts so it's impossible to respond to you.

If the job in question is jet pilot, then I don't care if you are a paramedic or served in the military.

If you are talking about a job as a paramedic then your assertion that any company in the medical industry would hire an unqualified person simply to fill a quota is ludicrous. That simply doesn't happen and you are a bad person for suggesting it does.

As for "what happened to America", love it or leave it buddy.
Action Jeans,

I know you are a patriot by the answers you have given. I am too, I have served this great country and have paid the price and I'm proud to have done so. I have scars I keep picking, memories that have festored, people I cannot forget and some I pray one day I can.

Just don't tell me to "love it or leave it". I will always love America, good or bad and anyone that wants to do us down I will actively stand against. I am living in another country now, in the UK.

These people are not Americans as we know it, but the indigenous Brits are good folk and I sure as hell know that for the most part they love America and would stand with us if anyone ever challenged us. It is different, (they dont have twinkies or crackerjack) but they (for the most part) love us and our country. If ever there was a true ally of the US, it is the UK is it and I hope our politicians honor that commitment.

Thanks for your comments Action Jeans- Missing Homestead, Miami.
Holy crap, you mean you actually did leave it?

So how do you even have an opinion about "What has happened to America"? For all you know you'd really like it here right now, right?
I should say that I deeply believe that something needs to be done to make up for slavery, the Black Codes, Jim Crow, segregation, and lynching. I just wish our leaders would come up with something more creative than giving me the shaft. Like maybe, good schools, safe streets, decent medical care.
Are you nuts? have you seen Africa lately? most people over there either have AIDS,are being killed by warlords, or are starving to death. Slavery was a small price to pay to be able to raise your family in the (now) land of the free. So something has already been done to make up for slavery. If you feel otherwise, why dont you give your house to black people, and then sell all your things and give them the money. Then go to Africa and give yourself up as a slave to the first black person that you see. Maybe you will feel better?
Four million Africans died being brought to the land of the free--where they were not free in any sense until late in the 20th century. Slavery was a hideous, brutal institution. Only a disgusting racist would say anything in favor of slavery.

And let's not forget the thousands of lynchings that occurred during the early 20th century. They used to advertise those events in the newspaper, and people took their picnic baskets to watch.
