Glacier Scientist: I Knew Data Hadn't Been Verified

The scientist behind the bogus claim in a Nobel Prize-winning UN report that Himalayan glaciers will have melted by 2035 last night admitted it was included purely to put political pressure on world leaders.

Dr Murari Lal also said he was well aware the statement, in the 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), did not rest on peer-reviewed scientific research.

In an interview with The Mail on Sunday, Dr Lal, the co-ordinating lead author of the report’s chapter on Asia, said: ‘It related to several countries in this region and their water sources. We thought that if we can
highlight it, it will impact policy-makers and politicians and encourage
them to take some concrete action.

‘It had importance for the region, so we thought we should put it in.

Dr Lal’s admission will only add to the mounting furore over the melting glaciers assertion, which the IPCC was last week forced to withdraw because it has no scientific foundation.

According to the IPCC’s statement of principles, its role is ‘to assess on a comprehensive, objective, open and transparent basis, scientific, technical and socio-economic information – IPCC reports should be
neutral with respect to policy’.

The claim that Himalayan glaciers are set to disappear by 2035 rests on two 1999 magazine interviews with glaciologist Syed Hasnain, which were then recycled without any further investigation in a 2005 report by the environmental campaign group WWF.

It was this report that Dr Lal and his team cited as their source.

The WWF article also contained a basic error in its arithmetic. A claim that one glacier was retreating at the alarming rate of 134 metres a year should in fact have said 23 metres – the authors had divided the total loss measured over 121 years by 21, not 121.

Last Friday, the WWF website posted a humiliating statement recognising the claim as ‘unsound’, and saying it ‘regrets any confusion caused’.

Dr Lal said: ‘We knew the WWF report with the 2035 date was “grey literature” [material not published in a peer-reviewed journal]. But it was never picked up by any of the authors in our working group, nor by
any of the more than 500 external reviewers, by the governments to which
it was sent, or by the final IPCC review editors.’

In fact, the 2035 melting date seems to have been plucked from thin air.

Leonard Weinstein received a B.Sc. in Physics in 1962 from Florida State University. He started work at NASA Langley Research Center in June 1962. While at Langley, Leonard obtained his Master and Doctor of Science degrees in Engineering from the George Washington University. He continued to work at NASA Langley until June 2007, ending as a Senior Research Scientist. Dr. Weinstein has had a career that is recognized for innovation. He has over 90 publications, including 11 patents. He has received numerous awards, commendations, and recognition’s for innovative experimental research, including an Exceptional Engineering Achievement Medal, an IR-100 award, the 1999 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Engineer of the year, the James Crowder Award, and over 40 other awards and recognitions for innovative experimental research. Dr. Weinstein is presently a Senior Research Fellow at the National Institute of Aerospace.

I guess you are just a Kool Aid drinking liberal. No matter how many reports come out that scientists manipulated data and lied you just will not change your mind. It is so obvious this is a ploy to get research grants and control the sheople. Don't worry though you will change your mind if they enact enough legislation to keep you off your hog due to the harm it is doing to the environment. Should n't you be riding an electric motorcycle that you can plug into solar panel/wind mill powered wall socket?

I'm looking forward to an electric bike someday. They've started making them, but they're expensive and don't have much range.

And employing silly insults like "Kool Aid drinking liberal" doesn't prove anything.

I've looked into solar power for the house. So far, it's too expensive, but the scientists and engineers are working on it.

Leonard Weistein is obviously a smart guy, but just because he's an engineer that works at NASA doesn't make him a climate expert. His argument is basically a variation of the "water vapor" argument the deniers have been bandying a bout for quite a while now. Here's why it's wrong:

Since January 2007, Sinclair has made this presentation to thousands of citizens throughout Michigan. He is a life long resident of Michigan, a graduate of the University of Michigan, and a long time advocate of environmental awareness in the Great Lakes area.

So what does he have a degree in?
Sinclair—who was trained and certified as a presenter of Al Gore’s Climate Project program in 2007—claims no academic expertise in climate theory.

“The first thing you have to understand is that I have no qualifications whatsoever,” said Sinclair, who works two jobs, as an orthopedic nurse as well as a graphic designer and animator. “I will refer you to the National Academies of Sciences, to NASA (yeah, NASA, like my guy, Lenny), to the IPCC, to the experts. I’m just trying to explain what they are telling us.”
Sinclair has followed the climate change issue since reading James Lovelock’s “Gaia” theories in the 1980s. He grew increasingly frustrated with dishonest and disingenuous arguments, perpetuated by political and industrial interests, which seem plausible enough at first glance, but crumble under modest scrutiny. (Kind of like climate change theories crumble when people falsify reports and exclude data, huh)
In 2007, he applied, and was accepted, as a trainee at Al Gore’s “Climate Project” in Nashville. “I had been doing a lot of reading around the issue, and I had a long background in energy and environment. This was a chance to meet and question some top flight climate experts.”
