Jimmy Carter and the Baptists call it quits: Irreconcilable differences

Read about it, in his own words, here.

From the link:

I have been a practising Christian all my life and a deacon and Bible teacher for many years. My faith is a source of strength and comfort to me, as religious beliefs are to hundreds of millions of people around the world.

So my decision to sever my ties with the Southern Baptist Convention, after six decades, was painful and difficult. It was, however, an unavoidable decision when the convention's leaders, quoting a few carefully selected Bible verses and claiming that Eve was created second to Adam and was responsible for original sin, ordained that women must be "subservient" to their husbands and prohibited from serving as deacons, pastors or chaplains in the military service. This was in conflict with my belief - confirmed in the holy scriptures - that we are all equal in the eyes of God.

Hey, watch yer language!
I also remember that Carter finally did get the hostages free and unharmed without bloodshed. He gave the Iranians money that belonged to them anyway. I shudder to think what would have happened to them if Ronnie had gone with guns and missiles blazing.

It was agonizing that it took so long to free them, but they were all right in the end.
Good satire, had me going for a sec
There's nothing satirical about it. That's what happened.
Yeah, all Reagan gave us was AIDS and crack cocaine.
I don't listen to Limbaugh, and I never claimed patriotic high ground, you did. So resolve your inferiority complex before embarrassing yourself on the Internet.
that's not very nice, Miss Harris.
I'm a member of Satans' army, does that qualify as military service? If not, how about paintball?
I must be getting old. Was Carter the guy who raised peanuts or the dude who was always changing shoes and welcoming me to his neighborhood? All those old guys in sweaters look a like to me.
Too much tinfoil in that coolie hat making you even stupider is my bet.
You can choose to believe the Bible or not, but, if you insist on calling yourself a practicing Christian, then you'd better adhere to the Good Book....and, if you claim to be a Bible teacher, it's good to know what it says!

"For Adam was first formed, then Eve." -- 1 Timothy 2:13

"And Adam was not deceived; but the woman, being deceived, was in the transgression." -- 1 Timothy 2:14

"Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, that if any obey not the Word, they also may be won without the word by the conduct of their wives...." -- 1 Peter 3:1

"Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with your wives with understanding, giving honor unto the wife as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers be not hindered." -- 1 Peter 3:7

Now, please don't go accusing me of being some Bible thumper...I respect everyone's right to believe or not to believe. All I'm saying is that Jimmy Carter, while he may be a decent man, has evolved into a liberal in recent years, whereas the Southern Baptist Convention has embraced its conservative roots.

Whatever your opinion, the Bible is clear.
Did you read the article I linked? He actually addresses exactly the point you are making here. It's the entire point of what he writes, in fact.

"Although not having training in religion or theology, I understand that the carefully selected verses found in the holy scriptures to justify the superiority of men owe more to time and place - and the determination of male leaders to hold onto their influence - than eternal truths. Similar Biblical excerpts could be found to support the approval of slavery and the timid acquiescence to oppressive rulers.

At the same time, I am also familiar with vivid descriptions in the same scriptures in which women are revered as pre-eminent leaders. During the years of the early Christian church women served as deacons, priests, bishops, apostles, teachers and prophets. It wasn't until the fourth century that dominant Christian leaders, all men, twisted and distorted holy scriptures to perpetuate their ascendant positions within the religious hierarchy.

I know, too, that Billy Graham, one of the most widely respected and revered Christians during my lifetime, did not understand why women were prevented from being priests and preachers. He said: "Women preach all over the world. It doesn't bother me from my study of the scriptures."

The truth is that male religious leaders have had - and still have - an option to interpret holy teachings either to exalt or subjugate women. They have, for their own selfish ends, overwhelmingly chosen the latter.
"

Did you see that part about "carefully selected verses"? Do you realize that's exactly what you did? Cherry-pick a few verses out of context that support your position, completely ignoring the verses in the same bible that support the opposite? Ignoring the facts about the history of Christianity that do not hold with what you believe to be right?

Read the rest of your bible while you're in there looking for verses to quote. Carter's a liberal? Jesus was a liberal! You know what they called Conservatives back then? Pharisees.
