I guess you conservatives don't understand satire. Let me see if I can explain it to you. Jackie and Dunlap aren't real! They are characters played by a comedic duo, Jonathan and Travis. You might say they are mocking conservatives by portraying them as dumb ignorant drunken crackers, one who is a cranky old redneck and the other a young strip club going, more with it redneck. They are playing characters. The real actors/comedians may actually be liberals who voted for Obama! To be fair they could be conservative or may be apolitical. They do mock both liberals and conservatives, but thats because they are comedians and you take your humour where you can get it. To treat this site as a conservative website is as ridiculous as treating The Colbert Nation site as a conservative website. There's a good chance that the actors you know as "Jackie" and "Dunlap" majored in theater in college. They may have starred in local theater productions, orspent time on the comedy club circuit. On their previous website they had videos of themselves as different characters playing wacky tv morning show personalities. Sorry to burst your bubble, but stay and enjoy the laughs--- if you have a sense of humour.
Van - You wouldn't last one day alone in the mountains.
Jackie and Dunlap are to Hillbillies what Chris Rock is to n-word. Making good fun of each other can only be done out of respect and kinship. It's not satire. It's just good old fun. The way Andy and Barney would do it. I'm sorry you can't share in it.
Ya'll can go on about this all ya'll want. Are they really this or that. If you come here and enjoy our stuff and enjoy posting about things that are important to you and most importantly obey our rules (Don't be insulting. Don't be racist. Be respectful of others or we'll kick your ass off here, as soon as we figure out how to do that. ) You're welcome to use this forum for whatever ya like!
We got an email a while back from a young man concerning issues of are we this or are we that. It means a lot to us and we hope this fellow doesn't mind us posting it here:
Back in June when I was getting ready to get married, my best friend David 'Tater' Turner -A Great American, came into town from Charlotte to be my best man. Him, along with some of my best buddies took me out to see some boobies and get loaded on my last night of freedom. Somewhere between going to Coyote Ugly and my 5th shot of the evening, he started reciting a monologue you guys had done about the democrats not picking a candidate yet. My buddy Adam recognized the bit, and started going along with him. I asked them what they were talking about, and they told me about The Red State Update.
I checked it out a few weeks later, and have been hooked since. My buddy Tater and I have been friends since Middle School, and he has always been a conservative southern guy. I am a bit more middle of the road than he is, but for the most part we agree politically. What we don't agree on, we just don't talk about.
He agrees with the majority of what y'all talk about on your show, even though he knows it is tongue and cheek. I do as well.
When I found out about the Town Hall Meeting here in town, I jumped at the chance to get tickets. I had tickets within the first hour they went on sale, in fear of them selling out. I have been looking forward to the show since.
When I got to the front of the building, I was behind a big fat dude in an Obama T, and in front of two lesbians(not the hot lipstick type either). I suddenly realized that I might not be in on the joke. I was wondering if I was going to be the only non liberal there. I was wondering if I was going to be an outcast. For a brief moment I thought about leaving, but having been such a fan for the past few months.. I hung around.
Once I got in the building, I stood in line for a beer with a lady with glasses. We were beside the merch booth when I saw a lady stop to buy a T-Shirt. It was the first non-artsy fartsy person I had seen since I got there. The lady in glasses rolled her eyes and told me that the lady in buying the T just didn't get it. SHE said she was a long time friend of yours(ever notice how everybody in Nashville is a long time friend of yours once you become successful?),and she gets a kick out of the "right wing hicks" who don't get you are making fun of them. "That's what's so funny.. they think IT'S REAL!"
This upset me, because while I am not beating the Limbaugh Drum, I am not an snooty artsty fartsy type either. Just because I don't have a mullet and a Hank Jr. Tshirt doesn't mean I am not proud of my heritage either. I, again, just about left for home. But, I was next in line.. and I really wanted a beer. Plus, again, I am a big fan. I had been looking forward to this for a while.
I sat down with my beer and popcorn and got ready for the show. I made it a point to sit by myself, so nobody else could ruin the show for me.
I stood and placed my hand over my heart for both the National Anthem and the Pledge (unlike Obama). I settled in, forgot about the crowd around me.. and completely got lost in the show. I enjoyed it immensely. While thoughts of me wondering if I was the only one in the crowd that wasn't in on the joke did run through my mind from time to time, the humor made up for any insecure and negative thoughts. When the heckler started yelling Bill Mayer chants, it was amusing to say the least. While I'm not a Kennedy, I sure as hell ain't that crazy right wing either. Y'all should pay him to come to every show.
The songs, the bits, everything was what I wanted it to be. I really enjoyed it.
After the show, I stuck around for a few and got to meet you both. I told you about my friend Tater who turned me on to ya'll. I told you how far right wing he was, and you looked a little surprised, but were genuinely grateful. I was impressed when you said you were happy with the mix of the crowd. I noticed more folks that didn't look like art students hanging around after the show. I mentioned how I liked that you are pretty equal in your jokes and you don't really go out of the way to upset either side. Your response was exactly what I'd hoped you would say.. You said you WANT to upset BOTH sides.
Any insecurity I may have felt before was lifted once I met you both. I was a bit upset going into the show. I was hoping you weren't going to make fun of folks like me. I was hoping I wouldn't walk out feeling like I was the butt of a joke that I had no idea about for the past 5 months. I was hoping I would walk away still a fan of the Red State Update, and I did.
I was so impressed in meeting you both personally. You were as gracious as you are talented. Thank you for taking the time to talk, and take a picture. It was on a cheap camera phone, but it still came out good enough to send to Tater back in NC. I sent him a message telling him about the show and how nice y'all were to me and everyone around you.
His response was -"lucky fucker"...
Tater has a way with words.
He sends his regards by the way!

Sorry if I implied conservatives shouldn't post here, that wasn't what I meant. The person who started this thread seemed under the impression that this was a conservative politics website/blog like pajamas media, or NRO, instead of what it is, a comedy website that pokes fun at both liberals and conservatives and popular culture. It is a credit to your acting and comedic skills that your characters are so believable, but I also appreciate the fact that you are kind to everybody. This was most apparent in your videos done outside the debates. Keep us laughing.
I dont understand the need for van to explain it out to the point where it looses the hilarity. How is it that you think we conservatives did not know this already? How is it that anyone would believe these guys are "real"? Damn. Can we get back to the comedy now Van?
