I see from iTunes that Hazel Dickens has a number of songs about coal mining and appears on an album titled Coal Mining Women. Another one to look at is Kathy Mattea's Coal.

i'm just an old chunk of coal, but i can ball a jack and i can lay a track, i can pick and shovel too. i was born in macon georgia, they kept my daddy in the macon jail. daddy was a gambler down in georgia, wound up on the wrong end of a gun, i was born in the backseat of a greyhound bus, rolling down highway 41. and the first thing i remember knowing was a lonesome whistle blowing and a youngin's dream of growing up to ride. and when i was just a baby, my momma told me, son, always be a good boy and don't never play with guns. my daddy told me, son, if you keep your hands clean then you won't hear them bloodhounds on your trail. but i've always been crazy and the trouble that it's put me through, been busted for things that i did and i didn't do. but the road goes on forever and the party never ends.

i got laid off today

my day

today i went to work and was hungry cause all i had for supper last night was beer and ice cream. i didn't have any breakfast. luckily they were having a blood drive at work. so i figured that if i gave blood then they would probably be giving away free hot dogs. so i gave blood but they didn't have any hotdogs. so i was a quart low and hungry.
